Zirconia Crowns Restore Bite and Smile Function

Problem

This patient came to us because his teeth were extremely short and flat, causing significant problems with his chewing muscles—especially noticeable when waking up in the morning.

He also reported dental sensitivity and dissatisfaction with his smile.

Approach

After a full clinical examination, a complete set of X-rays, pictures, and a review of his dental and medical history, we decided to create a digital mock-up. This allowed us to present a treatment proposal focused on improving his bite for long-term function while also enhancing the aesthetics of his smile.

The treatment plan included lengthening his natural teeth at the gum line to create a stronger foundation for his final restorations. This ensured both functional success and a proportionate aesthetic smile.

First Visit

We first tested the mock-up directly in the patient’s mouth—without preparing the teeth—so he could wear it for a few days to evaluate the new bite.
Once he adapted successfully, we proceeded with conservative tooth preparations, took final impressions, and provided him with temporary restorations.

Our in-house lab then began fabricating his final zirconia crowns, carefully designed to meet both his functional needs and aesthetic requests.

Final Result

The final crowns were delivered, the bite was tested and precisely adjusted, and impressions were taken to create custom occlusal splints. These devices help relax chewing muscles and protect the restorations from excessive grinding.

At the follow-up appointment the next day, we adjusted the splints, verified the bite, and took final photos and x-rays.

Now, the patient is thrilled with his new smile, free from sensitivity, and able to chew comfortably again—enjoying both function and aesthetics in perfect balance.
